The Bridge Project Sudbury is a charity that exists to provide development and support to vulnerable adults in our community.

What does that mean?

Well, the primary role of The Bridge Project Sudbury is to provide services and training allowing adults with learning disabilities to learn within a working environment.  It is a place for students to learn through working; to build up skills and self-esteem by making practical contributions to the running of our charity.

How do we do that?

Our students work with staff in various areas of The Bridge Project premises on Gainsborough Street.  Their duties include working in the Café kitchen, preparing food and washing up; waiting tables and clearing in the Café; helping on Reception; doing laundry for the Café; working in our vegetable garden; producing items for Bridge Pottery ceramics in the Pottery Workshop; and carrying out administrative tasks to support the running of the business.  One new area of learning is photography and media studies, with students beginning to develop a photographic library and producing a short film for our website.  Students have gained accredited training qualifications through these different aspects of our work-place.   In addition to their work-based learning, students are given support and training in areas like numeracy and literacy, as well as communication skills and independent living.

We also provide support for vulnerable adults in other ways – through meal services for older residents and a support group for those with mental health issues, called Open Doors.

The means by which this practical support is delivered, and the charity raises funds to supplement grants received, is through the following:

Gainsborough Street Café
Lunch Delivery Service
Tuesday Lunch Club
Monthly Film and Supper Club
Event Catering
Sudbury Farmers Market Monthly Pop Up Cafe
Conference Room Hire
Accredited Training in Catering and Hospitality
Bridge Pottery and ceramics
Paint Your Own pottery

The charity was set up in 1995 by our Chief Executive, Anesta Newson.  In 2000 we moved to premises at 20 Gainsborough Street, Sudbury where our work continues to thrive to this day.
