As well as promoting the bridge Project we gave children the opportunity to make a mini wormery, this gave them a chance to mess around with some dirt, catch a worm and start producing some fine compost from kitchen scraps. Radio 4 and TV’s Bob Flourdew opened the fair and signed copies of his books. Bob kindly gave Emma some tips on worm husbandry, at least that’s what she said…

We were a jolly party of 41 in the end, cosily seated at tables in the upstairs conference room, and quickly learned the Race Night rules thanks to our cheery host Bob Champion. Everyone had a flutter on the tote, with average winnings around £5, and there were also winning jockeys or owners for most races who had the choice of prizes generously donated by Vanners (silk ties and scarves); Emily Cowden (wine and chocolates) Karen Henderson (free remedial massage treatment) and the Bridge Project (vouchers for film and supper club nights/painting pottery/courtyard cafe). In addition to the quiz, one of the highlights of the night was the so-called ‘horse auction’ which generated furious bidding wars and great hilarity as it was revealed that Angie had randomly selected a pig race to be screened (although Phillip Soper didn’t mind as his speedy sow trotted home first!)

A total of £650 was raised for the Bridge Project and feedback was that people enjoyed their evening out. In addition to those mentioned above, thanks also to Drage & Tozer who generously sponsored several races and to staff at Mackman PR who all paid for jockeys or owners despite not being able to attend on the night.

Welcome to this new blog we hope to keep you up to date with the Friends exploits.

Coming up is our Charity Race Night, which is being held at The Mill Hotel in Sudbury on Friday May 11th.

The ticket includes a full buffet supper in the Mill’s newly refurbished surroundings overlooking the water meadows, with an on-site bar and tote if you fancy a flutter. You can also buy the rights to be a jockey or owner and if your horse wins, there will be plenty of tempting prizes to choose from. We are also looking for race sponsors, so please do get in touch if you think you can help. Tickets can be booked by contacting Angie care of, info@thebridgeproject.co.uk or from the reception at the Bradbury Courtyard or the Mill Hotel.

Restaurant Ramble

Food donated to raise cash for lunch scheme

TWO restaurants in west Suffolk donated their food as part of an innovative fundraising event that will provide equipment to extend a lunch delivery service to elderly residents.

The Mill Hotel and The Olde Bull Trivets restaurant in Sudbury provided the main course and dessert respectively for a ‘restaurant ramble’ evening last Wednesday.

The unusual eating experience saw diners walking between venues for each course.

The event raised £500 for the town’s Bridge Project charity, which will be used to purchase catering
equipment and hot delivery bags, so the charity can provide more hot lunches for frail people in the
town.

“It was a great night and we are only happy to help in this way,” said Dan Wilson, manager at the Mill Hotel, which has chosen the Bridge Project as its nominated charity.

James Hale, of the Olde Bull, added: “As a local business, it is only right we support local charities and hopefully the money raised will make a difference.”
